Pocket Casts: Podcast Player App Reviews

Best podcast app!

Best podcast app - full stop. Not only does this app have all the "premium" features you could want (voice boost, trim silence, etc) but unique features like being able to skip over intros. Not to mention, a GREAT discovery section and support that actually responds. All of this is included in the up-front price - no in-app purchases! Couldnt recommend this app enough.

Not for power users

Ive been using this app for over a year and its very frustrating. On the plus side its pretty but if you ever want to do any kind of management its very confusing and slow. For example the "up next" list is extremely slow if it has more than 10 or so episodes. And there is not way to bulk delete. You have to do it manually one by one. I have hundreds of episodes downloaded and theres just no easy way to delete or edit without deleting entire podcasts. the user interface is very confusing for navigating the library. Simple things like swiping a downloaded episode to the left -- no idea what its meant to do. No search functionality for episodes and the aforementioned bulk management issues. Would not recommend if you are a frequent podcast listener. Pretty poor for a premium paid app

New update problematic...

Ok. My issues seem to have resolved themselves. Have been a fan of this app for a while. A little peeved that the update blanked my carefully curated queue.

New versions are extremely buggy

Chromecast Audio Finally Fixed

Took a while but they finally fixed the chromecast audio functionality that went down about 4 updates ago. This app now has a purpose beyond the stock podcast player again.

Nice app with a fatal flaw

I love Pocket Casts but had to stop using it because the simple act of playing and pausing a podcast has gotten so sluggish and non-responsive. More often than not, when you press the Play or Pause button, there is a delay of several seconds before anything happens. Such a basic feature must be instantly responsive. Otherwise, the app is just too frustrating to use. I have switched to RSSRadio, but look forward to switching back to Pocket Casts if this problem is ever fixed.

Was great, now not great

Frequently will not download new cast, on Wifi or data. Restarting app does not fix, restarting phone does not fix.

Usually I love this app...

Usually I love this app, but recently if I have some podcasts queued up and I hit play it doesnt play them. I quit the app and try again but to no avail. I really dont want to find a new app! Please fix this!

Not impressed for a power user

I dont like that you cannot preview an episode by have a synopsis to read. You also cannot read any reviews which isnt a deal breaker but it means you have to go back to iTunes to find reviews. Sorry I paid for it.

The BEST Podcast App Available

Ive tried about 6 different podcasting apps and this one is the best. Let me name a few features of why: Want to have one podcast download and keep everything? Want to have another podcast download and keep only the most recent podcast? Want to have a podcast not auto download any episodes? Great! This app can do that. Want to create your own categories and filters of podcasts? Great! This app can do that. Want to change the layout of your podcast artwork? Great! This app can do that. Want to have a beautiful app-store-esque navigation and browser for new podcasts? Great! This app has that. Want to see podcast show notes inline with the podcast controls and your up-next list? Great! This app can do that. You need this app. Stop thinking about it and go buy it right now!!

Not as good as I thought

Has all the features youd expect from a podcast app. However, many times pausing playback can result in your no longer being able to continue playback. Pressing play doesnt do anything sometimes. Another flaw is that I bought this app for one reason only: Volume Boost. Just like Overcast, this app will only allow you to use the sound effects like blank skip and volume boost if the episode has been downloaded to the phone. That kinda defeats the purpose for me as I rather stream episodes. I dont like to waste time downloading something I will be deleting the next day. Once they figure out a way to make Volume Boost work while streaming, and solve the playback freezing issue, then we can crown this as top of the line podcast app. In the meantime, it is far from that.

Bugs

Several bugs: * sleep timer repeats itself after one cycle ended. I set the sleep timer for 15 minutes. 15 minutes passed and the podcast is paused. The next time i open the podcast app, i play the podcast and after 15 minutes, it just paused even when i dont activate the sleep timer. * the podcast app also crashes from time to time

I like it a lot

It works well, good design overall. My only real complaint at this time is that Chromecast integration is a little buggy. I can start a podcast via the Chromecast, and all the functions work. Once I get to the end and try to start a second podcast, it freezes. The only workaround I found is to disconnect from the Chromecast in the app, and reconnect.

A lot of handy features

The primary reason I bought this app was for chromecast. That said, when I switch between episodes when casting, my connection drops 100% of the time. Also, the delay after hitting play is brutal. But I do like this app a lot more than the basic one that comes with the iPhone aside from those glitches.

Keeps deleting my up next playlist!

This was my absolute favorite app to play podcasts - until it started deleting my up next list! Id get a great mix of podcasts just how I like it, then I go to add one and they ALL get deleted from the list. VERY ANNOYING BUG.

Bugs the word

Just downloaded this app DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!!!!! You have to leave the app and come back in for it to respond to any click! for the price they need to get this fixed or give refunds!

Sluggish & playback issues

A perfect app if they could squash the bugs. One second delay between pause and playback. Often times as well the headphones pause/play button will not work unless you activate your screen. Meaning: you press play on your headset and nothing happens but if you pick up the phone so the screen lights up the app will immediately start playing.

The cure tommy podcast angst

I had been using Downcast to listen and download podcasts for years. I have 400+ shows I like to keep track of. Refreshing so many shows with Downcast took forever and usually caused the app to crash. Pocket Casts seems to instantly update shows in my queue. The UX is simple and pleasant. It allows me to choose whether I want to stream or download specific episodes which is a simple feature that is hard to find on other apps. I finally made the switch from Downcast to PC be a Downcast would not let me import my saved OPML after I had to reinstall the app. PC let me import my list- easily! I have been using it for about a week and so far it is the best app for this podcast addict.

Great app

I listen to podcasts occasionally and it is an easy to use app that looks and works great.

Awesome app...but very buggy

This is hands down my favorite podcasts app. I like the design and UI quite a bit. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a mess at the moment. I enjoy listening to podcasts when Im showering, but this app has a tendency to start and stop in fits, especially at the beginning of a podcast. Downloaing the podcast seems to help, but that seems an unwelcome development. I predict they will adress the bugs in a (hopefully) future update. Still, Im sticking with it because its by far the best app for podcasts that Ive tried so far.
